Good News!!

Weilong can ride a bike without training wheels! He has been trying for the last 3 yrs. Twice the neurosurgeon has told me that Weilong has permanent spinal cord damage from the syrinx, damage that cannot be reversed. He said it had affected Weilong's balance and reflexes, that's why he could not ride a bike.

But the truth is that God answers prayer. It was so hard for Weilong to have training wheels at his age. Months ago he got balance good enough to ride his scooter pretty good. And just this last week or so he found that he could ride a bike! Such a happy boy!

Growth Report

Just got back from the endocrinologist. Weilong is nearly 52 inches tall!!! He grew over an inch in the last 3 months. And he weighs 57 lbs. He's doing so good. He loves school and is doing very well in math. He still struggles with English, but it just takes time I think. We keep plugging away at it. Weilong still has occasional headaches, but no nausea or vomiting. I think this is the healthiest he's ever been in his life, and I'm so thankful for that. God is so good!

I'll try to put pictures up soon. Life is keeping me so busy these days. The kids are all growing and doing well.

Getting bigger

Weilong weighed tonight. He weighs 56.6 lbs. He has gained nearly 4 lbs in a month! I think the dr was correct to adjust his levoxyl prescription. This is the most he has ever weighed. He's so excited.

Catching up

Weifu celebrated his 11th birthday in June and 3 weeks later Lisa turned 15! What a busy month it has been.

Weilong had his quarterly visit to the endocrinologist and officially weighs 52.8lbs and is 49.8 inches tall. In the last 3 months he has grown 1.5 inches. If he continues to grow at this rate he will grow 6 inches in the next year! Well worth those nightly shots. The doctor took more blood of course and thinks he may need to adjust Weilong's thyroid meds. He may be getting too much which could be one reason he is so thin. They always ask me if he eats well, and the answer is emphatically yes. He eats a whole lot at mealtimes. Not much of a snacker, but he eats, believe me. They all do!

The boys have been going to summer school for the month of June. They are taking English proficiency classes. They don't really want to go, but the extra work will pay off during the regular school year. Weilong is especially having a hard time learning to read. He is also the only one of our children who has an accent. It's a cute little accent, but he wants to loose it.

Summer

I'm just too busy for words this summer. I have pictures of Weifu's bday and of the kids swimming, but I've misplaced the cord that connects my camera to my computer.

All the kids did well in school this year. The boys are starting summer school just for the month of June. They will be taking an English proficiency class. They really resisted the idea of summer school, but thy need it!

I'm trying to redeem the time, make every moment count. They grow up so fast and will never be this young again. But I think God knew what he was doing when he gave babies to YOUNG women....

Lady Bug

Weilong has a new love in his life. The sweetest puppy you'll ever meet. She's 8 wks old today and her name is Lady Bug. She does not like to be alone, wants someone to be holding her all the time. She cries if she's not getting enough attention which is rarely. She fits in perfectly with all my little ones.

Medical update

Weilong has had several medical appointments in the last month or so. Yesterday he went for his 1 yr post op MRI. Everything looks the same as 6 months ago. We want the syrinx to shrink, but unfortunately it is still there and unchanged. The neurosurgeon said we should think about yet another surgery, one more complicated than the last that would fuse some of the vertebra and go in from the front of Weilong's neck. The purpose is to relieve pressure on his spinal column. But we have decided not to do any further surgery at this time. Only if Weilong's symptoms get much worse or if his life is threatened.

Most of the time Weilong is pain free and leads a very normal life. He still has occasional headaches and rarely has nausea and vomiting. Very rarely. The headaches don't last too long and are controllable with just tylenol or ibuprofen.

Also, Weilong is still unable to balance well enough to ride a bike. This embarrasses him, but there is nothing we can do about it. The surgeon said the more extensive surgery may or may not improve Weilong's balance. He said Weilong has some permanent damage to his spinal cord from the syrinx, so the surgery may not help even if the syrinx shrinks.

The decision not to have more surgery was not a difficult one because Weilong said he'd rather die than have more surgery. And as he is doing so well we didn't even try to urge him to consider it.

Now for some good news. Weilong visited the pediatric endocrinologist this month too. And he grew another 1.4 inches in the last 3 months. He is 48.9 inches tall. He has broken the 4 ft barrier!! And his feet have grown another size too. He's wearing size 7 pants now, and just 15 months ago he was size 4. That stuff works. He's 52 lbs, so he's gaining weight, he just looks so thin because he's getting taller so much faster.

We have also had 3 renal sonograms in the last few months. Before the press came out about melamine in the infant formula Weilong began having trouble urinating. Once he was unable to urinate for a whole day. So of course I took him to the doctor early next morning. But by then he was able to urinate normally without pain. There were moderate traces of blood in the urine, but no sign of UTI. A couple of wks later it happened again and they sent us for a renal sonogram. Weilong had debri or crystals in his bladder. The pediatrician consulted with a urologist and they decided to repeat the sono in 3 months. But before that WL had pain urinating again and more traces of blood in the urine so we had the sonogram early. Now it showed nothing in the bladder. A couple of months later Weilong again experienced difficulty urinating again and pain in his lower abdomen. There were moderate traces of blood in the urine, no UTI or infection present. Another MRI was clear. We're stumped. If the pattern is repeated the pediatrician said he'd refer us to a urologist. For now he wants Weilong to drink a lot of water regularly.

So, that's the latest medical update for my sweet little boy. He's sassy as ever and still the sweetest boy on the planet.

Spring Break week was packed with action this year.

Horses

We visited our extended family on Spring Break. The kids had a wonderful time. Especially with Aunt Bobbie and her family. She has horses and kitty cats and all kinds of fun things to do.
